It seems to be de rigeur for blogers to write a Matrix 3 (or revolution or whatever stupid name it had) review, so here’s my feelings:

Matrix 3 was by far the best matrix yet. I make my judgement based on the one thing that made the matrix movies worth watching; the action. The first matrix was overratted, the plot line was cliched, (dude, what if we were just part of a computer program? whoa), and the fight scenes were too short and stuck between some of the most pretentious dialogue ever put on the big screen (the major flaw of all the matrix movies). It’s hilarious to see people over 13 discussing the “Philosophy” of the matrix.* But when there was action it rocked, a perfect combination of chinese wire-fu and hollywood special effects.

The second movie was the the worst of the series but it wasn’t as bad as most people said. It actually introduced some intersting plot points like rogue prorams and smith as an independant actor, and of course had the dope car chase. I watched it on DVD while eating lunch so i didn’t really pay to much attention any way.

Now the thrid movie had even bigger plot holes than the first two, like why did zion need morpheus et al to come back and deliver the EMP? Why dosn’t Zion have it’s own EMPs? What happened t all the other ships? What the hell are neo’s and Smiths powers and how are they relatied? What does Smith want anyway?

But two words make none of that matter: Giant Robots.

Those robots battle suits were sweet. They moved like gorrrilas. They had big guns and held them “bus a cap in your ass” style. ‘nough said.

Smith is also a pretty kick ass villian, I wanted him to win. I wish more of the movie had delt with him. The final fight between smith and neo was good, nice and long. I wish they had gone more dragon ball Z style with it, having little pieces of earth floating up while they charged up their energy and having them shooting fireballs at each other and teleporting around (like in then opening sequence of X-men 2 whith night crawler, best action sequence of the year), but all the effects they did with the rain were sweet, some of the most creartive stuff I’ve seen in a while.

That’s about it, there is definitly going t be a thrid movie, as the ending was absurdly open ended for th.e ending of a trilogy. My advice for the next matrix:

1. make neo bad, i.e. make him a cyborg who has gained control of the machines and is gonna kill all the humans cause of revenge for trinity or some bullshit.

2. More giant robots, at least 3/4 the movie.

3. the other 1/4 should be kung fu, find an excuse to get jet li in there.

4. No talking. Lawernce fishburne should be shot the second he opens his mouth, goddamn is he annoying.

5. More of her.

*i did like the buddhist reference at the end o the film, when the machine that is taking Neo away, turns into the lotus(?) flower that the enlightened buddha sits on.

Good article from some defense expert, Lawrence J. Korb, who was sent aover to Iraq as an independant experts to assess what is going on. He reports that there is a large disconnect between what the Administration says and the reality on the ground.

“We received briefings from the senior staff of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), the Iraq Survey Group, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, and the 1st Armored Division. From the top level down, they had a similar message: the situation, even with the attacks of last week, is not as bad as the media wants Americans to believe. Here’s the argument: Nearly 90 percent of the attacks are in one area (the Sunni triangle). The rest of the country is doing just fine. The Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) is meeting its goals. The attacks of last week were caused by the progress we are making (“the bad news is the good news”).

We were told the U.S. military command does not need more troops, just better intelligence. Our briefers contended that more troops, even more Americans, would make the situation worse. Morale of the troops is good because they are aware of their mission, know they are making progress, and know when they are going home (asked about the Stars and Stripes survey, which cited three-quarters saying morale was low and nearly half saying they would not reenlist, they claimed the survey was distorted because it was taken during the heat of the summer). The line goes on: Just as we cannot control our border with Mexico, additional military forces cannot control Iraq’s border. Much of the violence is being caused by outside professionals or mercenary terrorists (when pressed, no one could come up with a figure above 50 for the number of outsiders). And of course, Saddam clearly “desired” to have weapons of mass destruction.

But when one looks out the window or talks to the soldiers a different perspective emerges. Baghdad is not bustling. Mortars are being fired. The soldiers are not sure of their mission. The situation seems at first glance to be getting worse instead of better. Iraqis who once may have, or still, support the U.S. are afraid to even tell their families for fear of what might happen to them.

Our soldiers are uncertain when they are going home (the date they were told was later than the one we read in the official briefings). Moreover, the 1st American Division which arrived in March 2003 is not even sure if they are going back to their home base in Germany. And if this uncertainty wasn’t enough, reaching out to their families is a costly undertaking. There are not enough telephones and our men and women are paying $2 a minute to call home.”

I’m getting pissed off about this line from the Bush admin, that all these new attacks are from international terrorists. They have shown zero evidence to support it and from the above article it’s pretty clear that they don’t have the evidence. But I’m not really that pissed off, cuase it’s just another lie from bush, nothing really new…

I was gonna post some comments about this aritcle in the new york times about china’s automoblie industry, but then I started reading china econmy watch on our very own sinosplice network, and it’s really just so much better than the some times intersting, but raely hard news, human interst stries that the new york times puts out.

The article he pusts up abut soy bean production in brazil is particularly intersting.
